The book “Terra. Mariana 1186–1888” supported by the Baltic International Bank and its Chairman of the Council Valeri Belokon was awarded as the best designed book in the nomination “Scientific Book” of the book design competition “Zelta ābele” (Golden Apple Tree) in 2015.
The book “Terra Mariana. 1186–1888″ reflects the history of Christianity in Latvia and Estonia — the former Livonia, which was then called the Land of Maria or Terra Mariana. Its single-copy original edition was printed in 1888 in Riga, the Baltic Polish landlords gave it to Pope Leo XIII as a gift, and now it is kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library. 70 parchment pages of the book-album contain rich visual and textual material about Livonian castles, castle ruins, churches, coats of arms of ancient noble families, seals, historical figures, as well as imprints of the ancient silver and gold coins.
“Terra Mariana. 1186–1888″ supported by the Baltic International Bank and its Chairman of the Council Valeri Belokon was issued in April 2014. The scientific editor of the book is Andris Levans (Andris Levāns), the artist — Aivars Plotka, and upon close collaboration between the National Library of Latvia and the Vatican Apostolic Library it was published by the publishing house “Franco Cosimo Panini”.
The Latvian Publishers' Association organizes the competition "Zelta ābele" since 1993, and the best designed books are annually announced in the following nominations: “Poetry”, “Prose”, “Documentary Publications”, “Children Books”, “Scientific Books”, “Reference Literature”, “Textbook”, “Picture Album”, and “Art Book”.
