News - April 7, 2015

Having highly appraised a tangible contribution of the Latvian literature to the country’s culture, Bank has become a supporter of the Annual Latvian Literary Award (LALIGABA). Bank’s award has been given in the category „Best Foreign Literature Translation into Latvian”. This year’s significant literary event will be held for the 15th consecutive time in Latvia. The event will be arranged to evaluate the 2015 literary works from a professional point of view and to provide recognition of excellence.

„Literature is one of the most important elements of an intellectually advanced and developed nation. We’re especially delighted to engage in honouring Latvia’s prominent literary works. While exporting our financial services and while stepping up our efforts to bring about foreign investments to Latvia, we’re fostering the link between foreign investors and Latvia. The translators, who share the same mission as we, take care to get the Latvian readers acquainted with the newest foreign literary masterpieces and to remove geographical and linguistic boundaries,” the Chairperson Ilona Gulchak says.

First launched in 2001, the Annual Latvian Literary Award will be given to the nominees in five categories such as the best poetry collection, the best prose collection, the best original literary work intended for children, the best foreign literary translation into Latvian, and the most exciting literary debut. There will be two special award categories. Thespecial mention award’ will be given to Eva Eglāja-Kristsone for „Iron Cutters. Cultural Contacts between Soviet Latvian and Latvian Exile Writers” (Dzelzsgriezēji. Latvijas un Rietumu trimdas rakstnieku kontakti), a study of Latvian cultural contacts. The ‘lifetime achievement award’ will be given to a Latvian poet, translator of prose and poetry, a literary critic and publisher Leons Briedis for his outstanding contribution to Latvian writing.

Winners of 2015 Prize for Literature will be selected by the LALIGABA’s panels of experts in an open vote. The voting results will be announced at the Award presentation ceremony to be held at the Latvian Railway History Museum on 24 April 2015. The outstanding receivers of the special mention award’ and the ‘lifetime achievement award’ will be feted during the ceremony.
